During the 1830s and 1840s, Cumming benefited from the gold mining industry. However, the California Gold Rush in 1849 put the city into an economic depression. During this time, railroads bypassed Cumming and took traffic from the Federal Road that ran near it.
As a result, the population was largely static for most of the 1800s. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the population started to grow again as people moved to the city for work. The completion of Georgia 400, a four-lane highway that runs through the city, helped turn Cumming into a bedroom community for those working in the Atlanta area.
In 1987, Cumming gained nationwide attention when it was the site of a pair of civil rights demonstrations by African Americans. The demonstration was met with protesters from the local Ku Klux Klan chapter, who threw stones and glass bottles at the marchers. This event prompted Governor Joseph M. Brown to send four companies of state militia to the city to protect the attendees.
There were a number of other incidents that led to violence in Cumming over the years, including the death of a young woman from sexual assault and a number of attacks on women by black men. The incident led to a national reputation for the city as being racially intolerant.
The town’s name is derived from the Cherokee tribe, who inhabited it for a long time. They won the land from Creek people in the Battle of Taliwa in 1755. After the battle, the Creek people moved south of the Chattahoochee River.
